Is it time to resign?

Last week I shared a poll to find out if it is important to employees for their employer to demonstrate that they care about their well-being outside of the office. 96% of persons said it was important to them (average of the results recorded on all platforms). So in general, it is important to people to feel like their employer wants the best for them. I personally thought that this was true anyway, but it was good to get measurable feedback. And this information is especially important during this time. If you are an employer, can you say that your organisation realistically has policies in place which recognise the employees’ wellness needs? If you are an employee, can you say that you are satisfied enough with your employer’s efforts in the wellness department?

The “Great Resignation” is a phenomenon currently and most notably being experienced in the US and Europe. In short it is the mass exodus of workers in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Causes cited for this phenomenon are:

1. Most people did not want to return to working full time in an office after being able to work from home. Though it was stressful, people enjoyed the flexibility of working at home as opposed to commuting to the office.

2. Persons were fearful of resuming work in an unsafe environment given that we are still in the midst of the pandemic.

3. Many employees experienced burnout during the pandemic because they worked longer hours. While working from home persons were expected to respond to correspondence outside of regular hours – the downside of being constantly connected.

With that being said, have you thought about resigning recently? Ultimately the decision is yours but it may be time to go if you notice the following:

1. Your values and theirs no longer align. When you just started you felt like you were joining a great company and that you were making a difference. Now it seems that the decisions they are making do not sit well with you and they are going in another direction. You may be able to stand it for a while but your differences will eventually begin to manifest in one way or another, and so you should start looking. The Great Resignation is a clear indicator of people’s values no longer aligning. Many employees have chosen their family life and mental health over the demands of their jobs after Covid-19 wreaked havoc.

2. You have hit the ceiling in your career. So you have climbed the corporate ladder and your organisation in your opinion cannot take you any further. Then it may be time to move on. Part of your work experience must entail growth otherwise you will get bored and you will not improve as a professional in your respective field. If you realize that there isn’t much else for you to do where you are, or that you have done all that you can do, it may be a good idea to move on to a new opportunity.

3. You want a change. Sometimes you just can’t put your finger on it but you feel ready for another chapter. That’s just your instinct telling you to move on which is perfectly fine. Maybe you just want an easier commute, or you are just tired of the routine. Whatever the reason, go ahead and take the leap of faith.

Resigning is a big decision. Whatever you decide, make sure to weigh the pros and cons to ensure that your choice is right for you. Good luck!
