The only constant is change. Change is inevitable. Just a few of the common phrases we hear about change which are both very true. Everything is temporary on some level. It can sometimes be a depressing sentiment however it is important to acknowledge and accept this reality. However, how do you deal with change in your work life? Maybe you got a new boss, or you are leaving to go to work somewhere new, or your boss establishes a new process. Do you freak out or do you take change as it comes? Here are some tips to help you to be ready no matter what comes your way at the office:
1. Go with the flow. Many times changes happen and they were out of your hands. You were not consulted or they were top-level decisions. This can be off-putting however all you can do is accept and adjust. Give yourself some time to digest what has taken place, but then start to adapt to what the new changes require of you. Read up on any paperwork related to the adjustment and ask questions. It will eventually become routine again.
2. Maintain your regular schedule outside of work. You would be surprised how stressful adjustments at work can be. We spend most of our day at the office, so it makes sense that when changes take place there they can throw us off. When that happens and you recognize that you are not dealing with it well, try to make sure to maintain work/life balance. Keep up your exercise routine, spend time with your family, whatever keeps you grounded and relaxed. While you learn to cope, it would be good for the rest of your life to stay the same so that you’re not managing several changes all at once.
3. Speak to someone about it. Sometimes adjusting may be more difficult for a variety of reasons. If you have some input, make sure to respectfully voice your concerns and hopefully those will be taken into consideration. If not, you should approach your boss to discuss the way forward and or express your struggles. Ensure that you do not come off as though you are simply complaining; have suggestions ready and be able to support them. Keep in mind that your suggestions may not be accepted, but it is good to express your ideas because something you saw may have been missed. You can also contact your EAP provider. They are there not only to help you with personal issues but through times like these as well.
Change is bound to happen. You will have to deal with it at some point in your career. Keep these tips in mind when those times come. Have a great week!
