Believe in yourself!

We all have rough weeks. Some of them really throw us for a loop. Everything seems to go wrong all at the same time. Deadlines creep up and there may be two or three important tasks due around the same date. You find yourself drowning and in creeps that confidence crusher, self-doubt. Such an unproductive emotion but you just cannot help it. I remember a particularly trying day for me where I literally sat and stared into space for a few minutes in the office because I just did not know what to do. At that point I started to get very upset and just wanted to put everything down and leave. I did not think that I could get through it all and did not want to try. Here are a few tips to try whenever you get stuck in a bout of self-doubt:

  1. Acknowledge the emotion. Recognize it and then take steps to move forward. Whether you feel beat up on by colleagues, or just overwhelmed in general and cannot begin to get things done, pause, take a breath and then start a task. You can and will complete them all but in the midst of that negative emotion you will not be able to progress. So take note of it and process it, but move on.
  2. Air your concerns. Call your spouse, a friend, your mom. Whoever is your go-to support system. Sometimes you need to just vent about what you are going through. They also tend to remind you that you are more than capable of getting the job done, and will put a much needed smile on your face. We all could use a push sometimes and who better to help than a loved one.
  3. Take a break. Take an early lunch. Run down to the cafeteria and get a snack or something to drink. Go to the bathroom so you can just take a walk. Stepping away for a second can make such a difference. Think about it. Would you have been given all of these responsibilities if you could not do them? Of course not. This is just a fleeting moment of self-doubt that you will get past.

In addition to the tips above, I wanted to share a video from Iyanla Vanzant which shows you an exercise to treat with self-doubt. Lately I have been loving her videos. They pop up all the time for me on YouTube and they always deliver. She can be harsh at times but she is always on the ball and gives such great advice.

Here’s to a confident you and a productive week ahead!
