Making the best decisions you can

Everyday life is about making decisions. What do I eat for breakfast? What am I going to wear to work? Which route should I take to work to get there fastest? We make decisions all day. At work is of course no different, but we tend to feel more concerned about the decisions we make because there is more at stake. So how do we get over ourselves and make the decisions we need to for that project? Here are some Dos and Don’ts for you to consider.

1. Do your research. Every decision you make should be thoroughly researched before it is made. Of course, how much research is required will depend on the decision itself so you have to use your discretion. However, just understand that once you base your decision on sound information sourced beforehand, that is all that matters.

2. Do consult with your teammates. Most decisions will affect many different stakeholders in the project at hand. We can sometimes take that lightly and try to rush through a decision without first checking in with those stakeholders or members of your team. Make sure to consult with them so that they can give insights, bring to light things you may have missed that could affect the outcome of your decision, and of course to make sure that everyone is on board, or at the very least aware.

3. Don’t doubt yourself. So you have done the research and all parties have been made aware. Sometimes, a sneaky, nagging feeling enters your mind that your decision was not the right one. Or that things may not progress well based on the selection made. You cannot control what happens next. Once your decision was an informed one that was approved by your superiors, you need not beat yourself up about it. It is done. Which brings me to my last tip:

4. Don’t worry if it doesn’t work out. People stress out so much about things when they do not go as planned. I tend to give myself a few minutes to stew or be upset about it, but after that I move on to find the solution. We have to make decisions too often to dwell when they go wrong. It can drive you crazy. So once the decision is made, it is made and you deal with the results of that decision as they come. Regardless of how negative the results may be, all you can do is pick up the pieces and move forward with a new solution. Chin up.

Hoping that these tips are helpful when next you have a nail-biting decision to make. Continue to do your best and everything will fall into place. Cheers!
