Last week was hectic, and then the surge in Covid-19 cases stressed me out even more. For some reason though, it got me thinking about leadership. Managing this pandemic has to be difficult for those in the positions to do so, and of course managing your team amidst all of this uncertainty is difficult as well. There are so many questions being asked once more. Will we shutdown again? What will the work schedule be like going forward? And these are just a few. If you are a leader in these times, this may be the toughest period you have faced in your career. Just sharing some quick tips to get you through this challenging time.
1. Be adaptable. The world is going through so many changes right now, and you have to be able to go with the flow. It has not been business as usual for the last few months, and it won’t be for a while. Expecting things to remain the same is unrealistic and not making adjustments at work to account for these changes is a grave mistake. Come outside of your comfort zone, face reality and do what you know needs to be done.
2. Listen to your team. We already know that communication is key, but have you been listening to your staff? They are the persons on the ground who are intimately aware of what is going on with their specific function. If they bring you suggestions, make the effort to consider their points. You may not be able to implement all of their recommendations, but at the very least they will recognise that you value their opinions, and you will get sound feedback on work processes and procedures when improvements have to be made.
3. Be resilient. The pandemic has been a true test of resilience for us in all facets of our lives. In the workplace is clearly no different. Change is difficult but it is constant, especially now. It is easy to find yourself in a defeatist place, where you are just ready to give up, but now is the time to keep going. Your team is watching, and they take cues from you.
Let us continue to be great leaders. Our teams need us. Don’t let them down!
