New job? Here are some tips for you.

Good for you! You’ve got a new job. As exciting as that is, it can also be very scary. New people, new location, new culture. You would not have left your previous job for this one if it did not make sense. So you just need to get over your nerves and get in there. Here are some tips to get you through those first few weeks.

  1. Dress to impress. Depends on where you work but by the end of the first week you can tell the company’s culture in terms of dress code. As they say, first impressions are lasting, so make sure you step out. It is good for you to present yourself in a professional manner to your colleagues. Ladies, please try to keep dresses over the knee and make sure your clothes fit well but not too snug – it can give the wrong impression. Gentlemen, please invest in a suit or two and some ties. Even if where you work is not that formal, these are some useful staples. Make sure your suit is fitted to you – too long/too baggy/too short is not very polished.
  2. Be on time. This should go without saying but I’m saying it again. Please, please don’t be late. If something beyond your control happens, and you will be late as a result, make sure to call in to let them know.
  3. Work smart. Get the work done but don’t kill yourself – you still need to maintain work/life balance. Put your best foot forward and work well, be helpful and thorough. However you will eventually have many tasks to do and therefore have to prioritise, so figure out quickly what tasks are more crucial and work to suit.
  4. Pay attention. Remember, although you were hired for your capabilities you still need to learn the culture of the organization. Make sure to listen, ask questions and be observant. This will help you to get a sense of the company and in turn help you to work better.

Go get ’em!
